Call 811 before grinding

Grinding goes below ground. Alabama law requires anyone digging or excavating to give at least three business days' notice to underground utility owners through Alabama 811. The call is free (811 or 800-292-8525 in Alabama).[2] Ask whether your crew will place the 811 request for you.

Grinding vs. full removal

Grinding leaves the deep roots to rot in place. That's fine for lawns and beds. If you're building, pouring a slab or setting a fence post right on the spot, ask about digging out the root ball instead. Clearing the line for a new fence? Our sister fence guide explains which fence posts hold up in Alabama's damp ground.
